Hi
Dear Teaching of Talking Friends,
We are rapidly approaching the holidays and for those who are wondering what the perfect gift would be for a loved one with aphasia or apraxia, I have a solution.
As many of you know I have spent years developing fun and easy methods to improve talking for those who have aphasia, apraxia and dysarthria. As a speech language pathologist who has spent the last 47 years helping those with speaking difficulties I have a strong desire to share what I have learned with both care partners and therapists.
As an expert in speaking difficulties I had to go through many trial and error methods before I arrived at speech therapy methods that really work.
Yes I tried the alternate communication I pads, computer programs and other software that did not work. I tried the workbooks that were fine for busy homework, the flash cards and the like, but none of these really helped me engage the people with speaking difficulties into conversation.
Conversation is how we use speech. A long time ago I figured: If conversation is talking, and I want to help people talk, then I must get them talking in conversation. It was at that moment my approach to speaking difficulties changed. IF I WAS GOING TO GET A PERSON TALKING, THEN I MUST TALK WITH THEM AND SPEAK OF THE THINGS THAT REALLY LIGHT UP THAT PERSON.
I started talking with people about football, baseball, the stock market, beers, wines, children, grandchildsren, tv, movies, and anything that INTERESTED THEM.
Their desire to talk increased, and then I used the skills that I have to address articulation, voice, language, and every other aspect of speaking.
Therapy then became fun for me, and fun for the person with the speaking difficulty. What actually happens is they look forward to their therapy each week, and so do I.
One of the best things about my method: The expert methods that took me 47 years to master, I TEACH TO EACH CARE PARTNER, and if there is no care partner I work with the individual with the speaking difficulty and then supply them with the video of the speech therapy visit so that they can practice all the methods independently. We always try to find what will work for each individual since each one has a specific list of concerns and symptoms that must be
mastered. There is no substitute for a therapy expert who can look at a speaking difficulty and figure out the best and fastest way to help that person. No computer or "program" can do that and that is why many are disillusioned with alternative electronic methods.
I will list for you below ways you can learn to help a loved one talk, or resources for those who do not have a care partner at home.
