Hi
Speech therapy for some adults or children is a slow and tedious process. That happens when there is an apraxia of speech and aphasia that have not been properly diagnosed or addressed.
Apraxia is difficulty formulating the sounds of speech and you will learn how to help your loved one or clients make the necessary movements to produce speech sounds accurately. One must re-educate the tongue and surrounding structures. They must know what to do and where to go inside the mouth to make the sounds. This is necessary for speaking clearly. Many do not realize that a family member needs to participate at home and
stimulate and assure the words are spoken clearly. It's that around the clock practice that gets the results of better speaking.
Once the apraxia is improved the therapist and caregiver can then apply methods of aphasia-language stimulation to help with recall and chaining words together. It is often most helpful to address the apraxia first rather than the aphasia. Making sure the sounds of speech are accurately produced is the key to being understood, (apraxia) and then one must learn how to formulate a phrase or sentence. (aphasia). Both for many need to be addressed. You cannot really
improve an aphasia if a considerable apraxia exists and we show you how to help improve the apraxia first. That is the order of treatment.
