How long does it take to recover from aphasia or apraxia?
As a beginning clinician, I never knew.
All I knew as a new speech language pathologist was that I was "the guy," who was supposed to help people talk. I just knew that my therapy would be the "cure."
With time I learned what all my instructors did not know nor impart. Aphasia is never really cured. Few return to the way they were before the incident.
Yes, they talk better if they have expert help from a therapist or an educated partner.
We ADAPT; we learn to adjust to our limitations.
Aphasia diminishes, yes. Speech most often improves with time and attention with intensive work by a therapist or a trained care partner.
It's a lifetime endeavor.
Just know it's a lifetime endeavor and learn all that you can as a partner to the person with aphasia since expert treatment for the long haul is not an option in most cases.
Don't expect aphasia to improve on its own.
It's one of those speaking challenges that takes attention and practice for maximum recovery.
