Contained in ths e mail are comments from the one of many who have been undergoing speech therapy and mentoring in The Teaching of Talking Method for Better Speaking Apraxia.
I hope you like this document which is unedited text from a mother of a young, 40 year old man we have been seeing.
1. Previous therapy had been disappointing and discouraging to say the least. I was told he would most likely not be able to talk again and encouraged to get a communication board. It was tedious trying to get the message programmed and not a good solution.
2. No previous therapist had mentioned the term apraxia. I just knew he had aphasia. Moshe Mark explained what it meant and what we would need to do to get Ben able to form words.
3. I have learned that we had to start out just like teaching a baby to talk. How to hold the mouth, lips, teeth and tongue as well as
when to add air as with the ‘H’ sound.
After mastering the vowels we added consonants and on to one syllable words. Then as we added longer words we would break it down to small parts and say them slowly.
4. I have had to think about each word - what my mouth is doing to make it come out. I always took that for granted before. Ben has learned to repeat words after I say them. They are now starting to come automatically without me having to tell him first.
5. Mark believes there is no point to learn to say things that you are not going to use. He believes the most important thing is to be able to converse with friends and family.
6. Ben’s progress after one year with Mark has been amazing. Since we both are learning Mark’s techniques I can help Ben all the time to learn new words and phrases and if we hit a rough spot Mark helps us through it at the next session. I stepped out on faith to try Mark. I told myself I couldn’t let that initial amount of money keep Ben from getting a chance to talk again. I’m so glad I trusted him.
