{VIDEO} Stepping Stone Approach to Dysarthria

Recently we posted on our Facebook page about our approach to Dysarthria with The Teaching of Talking Method.

In this video Moshe Mark shares some of the fundamentals of the method for caregivers and speech-language pathologists. The stepping stones are metaphors for the approach; we realize that walking on stepping stones would not be appropriate for this method, but you can get the idea.

One of the major keys to understandable speech for those with dysarthria and for some with apraxia involves what I call the "stepping stone approach" to speech therapy. Many think that if they would "only slow down speech would be better." However, the key to clearer speech for those with dysarthria and apraxia is the pausing of speech between each spoken word. One must pause between each spoken word very much like one must step on one stepping stone at a time, wait, and then move on to the next stepping stone and so on.
