Hi
Years ago if you were deaf you learned sign language. However there were a few renegades who refused to pigeon-hole those who were deaf into only sign language. Many of them thought there must be a way to teach them to talk.
Annie Sullivan was one such individual who helped start a movement called the ORAL APPROACH, which was designed to help those who were deaf how to talk and added it to sign-language approaches (Total Communication).
Listen and watch as Moshe Mark Ittleman compares the philosophies of the deaf and hard of hearing to those that pertain to those with aphasia and apraxia.
In the latter, many prefer electronic instruments which are insanely expensive and wind up on the shelf collecting dust for many.
Many with aphasia and apraxia are capable of speech and language expression depending on the efficacy of the method, the skills of the therapist, and the commitment of those with aphasia, apraxia and their family members.
